Ray gives us the blues like a steady rollin'
man. He is well known in the Bay Area as a traditional jazz
player with a strong blues background. "I don't draw
a line between blues and jazz, but I know the line is sometimes
real." Back when Ray was learning to play the piano from
Johnny Witwer, he was introduced to the blues of Leroy Carr
and Big Maceo. The blues have been a part of his repetoire
and style ever since.
This CD of piano instrumentals includes tunes by Ray, or by
or reminiscent of: Jimmy Yancy, Big Maceo, Art Hodes, Jimmy
Rogers, Leroy Carr, George Zack, Cripple Clarence Lofton,
Jelly Roll Morton, Tiny Parham and Washington Phillips. This
recording was made in August, 2002, in Kearny Barton's studio,
Audio Recording, on a Grotrian-Steinweg piano.
"While hardly a household name, his piano
work manages the driving bass lines, plus the grit and grind
necessary. Superb sound throughout."Roots &
