In 1968, Babe Stovall was entertaining college
students, hippies, tourists, artists and locals on the streets
and in the cafes and art galleries of the French Quarter in
New Orleans, captivating them with his antics while singing
and picking on his National guitar. Babe's guitar playing
style was influenced by Tommy Johnson, whom he'd met in Mississippi
around 1930.
Babe was the inspiration of the song, Mr.
Bojangles, by Jerry Jeff Walker, who met Babe at about the
time of this recording. Listen to Will
the Circle Be Unbroken? as he flips the guitar over
the back of his head and doesn't miss a beat.
Extensive liner notes are written by David
Evans, Professor of Music, University of Memphis.
